While looking for some translation projects, questions about how to win a project come to our mind Put yourself in the place of an HR manager of a translation company and ask a few questions to yourself what qualities, business ethics, dedication etc, you would expect from a translator, if you were supposed to hire a linguist to assign an urgent project on short deadline.
If you have been a professional linguist offering translation services to a translation agency, then you might calculate issues and problems occur while completing a project. List all the problems in your mind and write them on a paper. Now make a strategy to tackle them.
For example, how will you deal with a short deadline? Simple! You will work overnight! Obviously, you will have to burn the midnight oil, give up your sleep etc.
You have to convince the employer you don’t sleep too much and prefer to sleep only for 5 to 6 hours daily.
Due to fierce competition in the market, translation agencies expect lower charges per word, if you are not flexible, then you can miss a project ranging from a small amount of words to wide number of pages. If you are flexible, the door will remain open for you.
First comes your native language then comes subject area. You might be given a test to clear to check your language expertise. After the translation, review it a few times and then make it read to someone and ask him or her if there is any mistake, inconsistency etc.
Most of the translators are not able to clear a test just because of inappropriate words and inconsistency in target language.
Don’t forget that such things can’t be mentioned in a resume. You will discuss all these things while discussion.
